The REDD+ Cikel project is a positive influence in the Paragominas region and sends a very powerful message: standing forests are a real income diversification opportunity for companies.

The project, which is Brazil's first Avoided Planned Deforestation (APD) initiative, is located in the municipality of Paragominas, in the state of Pará (PA), and prevents the deforestation of 27,000 hectares of native Amazon Rainforest.

The Challenge of Preservation in Paragominas

Pará is one of the states with the highest deforestation rates in Brazil, having already converted 70% of its original land cover. The deforestation pressure in the region is high and contributes to greenhouse gas emissions in Brazil.

Brazil's First Avoided Planned Deforestation (APD) Project

Legal deforestation for cattle farming on CBNS's property was considered an option during an economic crisis. However, with visionary decision-making, CNBS chose to initiate a preservation project and carbon credit generation, thus influencing its entire surroundings and ensuring the existence of 27,000 hectares of essential forest for the development of communities and the survival of hundreds of species of fauna and flora.

Some Project Numbers

Through biodiversity inventories, hundreds of species inhabiting the region were identified. T

he black-bearded saki monkey (Cebus kaapori), which inhabits the Cikel project area, is considered one of the most endangered terrestrial mammals in the Amazon. Its population is expected to halve in the next 30 years.
